At McNider Sanctuary, our breeding program is guided by the courage to do things the right way and the desire to create beauty. We believe that exceptional horses are not created by chance, but through intentional breeding rooted in ethics, knowledge, and respect for the horse itself. Each pairing is carefully selected with the goal of producing Lusitanos that are physically sound, mentally engaged, naturally athletic, and truly beautiful to contemplate. Temperament, intelligence, health, movement quality, and overall harmony are considered with equal importance.
Our horses are raised in a peaceful sanctuary environment designed to reflect the horse’s natural way of life. Large open pastures, herd living, freedom of movement, and social interaction are central to our philosophy because we believe they are essential to the healthy physical and emotional development of the horse.
Foals remain with their mothers throughout the early stages of life, developing confidence and balance. When they are ready, the foal and its dam join the sanctuary’s small herd, allowing them to gradually develop healthy social behaviors within a peaceful herd environment.
At the buyer’s request, we may also allow a more natural weaning process, where the foal remains with its mother for a longer period and gradually transitions away from her in a gentler and more progressive manner. Following weaning, young horses continue their development living freely within the sanctuary herd until they find their adoptive family.
All foals are APSL registered at the age of six months.
Every foal born at McNider Sanctuary receives the veterinary care necessary to support healthy development, including vaccinations, deworming protocols, and regular hoof care. Because early experiences shape the horse of tomorrow, our foals are handled regularly with gentleness and intention. Through calm and respectful interactions, they develop trust, respect, and confidence around humans while preserving their natural curiosity and authenticity.

Because we are devoted to breeding, foaling, and raising young horses with care and intention, horses are not started under saddle at the sanctuary. We believe that every horse deserves the opportunity to mature physically and mentally before beginning its training.
